The November meeting will feature a number of demonstrations of hardware and software for speech recognition and imaging. The format will be small group rotations through several stations demonstrating different packages, including:
Ms Pam Nott, HSM Consultants demonstrating Dragon Dictate 30K, a speech recognition package, and
AMFAC/Medrecord demonstrating an imaging system.
Executive Meeting Minutes: Minutes of the AHIA(QLD) Executive Meetings are not circulated to members because of the costs involved, however, copies are available from the Secretary upon request.
RACGP Interim Code of Practice: AHIA(QLD) did make a response to the recent request for comments on the RACGP Interim Code of Practice. A heartfelt thank you to Peter and Ian for their work on our behalf.
HIC'94: The 1994 national Health Informatics Conference will be held at the Gold Coast from 30 July to 2 August. Peter Whan has agreed to serve on the organising committee; John Bennett and Lynn Zelmer have agreed serve on the program committee.
HIC'93's success was due, in large part, to the efforts of individuals and groups working towards a common goal. AHIA(QLD) thanks everyone involved and encourages every member to support HIC'94.
Computer Basics for Health Practitioners 1993: The AHIA(QLD) 1993 Yearbook has been selling well both in Queensland and interstate. AHIA(QLD) members may obtain copies for $15 postpaid; the cost to others is $20 postpaid. Order from AHIA(QLD) c/- FMP, PO Box 1144, Milton Centre, QLD 4064.
CAS--A Radiotherapy Computer System: Ms Jennifer Bongers, Data Manager, and Dr Greg Pedrazzini, Senior Physicist, both from the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, described their locally-developed software for maintaining patient records and treatment schedules.
The system started in 1981-82 on a PDP11 and has since migrated to a MicroVax and then to a Unix-based 486 PC. The extensible network model database maintains full patient details for approximately 6000 individuals and provides good response time and ease of use.
A parallel paper record is maintained but is seldom required as the system is very reliable. Doctors using the system have terminals in their offices and enter their own data. The system has also been installed in several other locations in Australia.
General Practice Software: Dr Bruce Hand and programmer Greg Cecil demonstrated their locally-developed DOS-based general practice software package for patient records, prescription writing, and electronic delivery of pathology results.
Since paper copies of pathology results are stored in a single daily log file doctors use the computer system to save time and the hassle of searching for individual records. The 14000 patient system also provides individually customiseable macros for faster data entry.
